Mr. Bill Carico, ACTS Corp. President and Sr. Consultant

Bill presents topics throughout the seminar, bringing his unique insights to help explain and demystify the technical and business challenges facing IT professionals. In addition, the series is complemented by numerous guest speakers.

Bill has over 35 years of experience working in IT. He works as an IT consultant and is an author of numerous articles appearing in a number of publications, including The Mainframe Executive, zJournal and he has written a number of white papers. He is the founder of the Technical Awareness Series (TAS) which has been held over 50 times world-wide since 1987.  (Click here to see the full lineup of TAS seminars offered in this unique series) His specialty areas include security, business continuity, server consolidation, performance and tuning, virtualization, and open source software. Bill has also worked for both Intel and IBM, giving him a unique perspective from which to understand the technical and marketing dynamics of the computer industry.

Teach Team varies by city
Jim Porell is an IBM distinguished engineer and has served in a number of high-profile roles during his career. He has been chief architect for the IBM System z Software Brand and he is also a former chairperson of the zSeries Software Design council, a group which oversees all IBM mainframe operating systems and middleware. A common theme has been Jim's focus to ensure IBM deploys technology that works consistently across operating systems, and to enable application growth for IBM's customers, either by writing their own new applications or deploying new code from independent software vendors. For many years, Jim has also been working with customers to build secure solutions. He is co-author of Larstan's Black Book of Corporate Security and has been consulting with customers on security solutions for more than 12 years.

Monte Bauman, IBM Technical Specialist and member of ACTS Advisory Board, Columbus OH.  Monte is a certified System z IT Architect and America's group designated specialist for System z technical support.  His specialties include the new and emerging architecture and workloads arena. Monte has over 25 years of experience in the IT industry, starting in the Glendale Processor Development Lab in Endicott NY.  Amidst recent work efforts, Monte has helped his customers deploy Java/WAS workloads and zAAP technology, Linux workloads and IFL technology, and DB2 workloads and zIIP technology, and he has pioneered new techniques for analyzing and comparing alternatives in server virtualization. Monte's "model" provides a technical and cost (aka TCO) comparative analysis, helping customers understand the finer points of virtualization and the machines that support virtualization (i.e. System z and zVM, and x86 and VMWare).

John Kirschner, VP of Special Projects and CTO for ABSi.  John is a technology specialist who has over 25 years experience in IT. He has worked for Lockheed Martin and IBM as a I/T architect, systems engineer, systems programmer, instructor, and as a consultant. He is a certified IT security specialist and helps establish US government security policies in regard to new technologies. John is a certified I/T architect, certified business manager and certified large systems specialist. John is the author of numerous white papers on systems architecture, availability, performance, and ADPE modernization.


Reed Mullen is the consolidation and virtualization initiative leader for IBM System z. Over the years, he has held management, product planning, and strategy development positions in the IBM mainframe organization. In 1999, he played a key role in developing the Linux on S/390 business plan that leverages the mainframe’s ability to host large-scale virtual server environments. Since then, he has applied his expertise in the areas of strategy, business development, and technical marketing support to help grow the Linux on System z business.


Len Santalucia is CTO and Business Development manager for Vicom Infinity, Inc. Len has the responsibility for establishing the technical direction for his firm. Working with enterprise customers he determines business and customer needs and drives the design of solutions to meet those needs. His specialty areas include Linux, Open Systems, Large Scale Virtualization, Object Oriented, LAN, and Web 2.0 technologies for the Financial Services and Banking Sector. He has served as Chairman of the System z Linux Executive Customer Council for the last 8 years.

Dennis Wunder has been with IBM for 29 years and has expertise in many areas, including z/OS, Linux, IBM middleware, networking, virtualization and desktop operating systems. He has architected several workshops to introduce IBM’s clients and business partners to IBM’s new technologies. He’s currently an executive IT specialist with the Executive Briefing Center in Poughkeepsie, NY, where annually he interacts with hundreds of IBM’s customers to explain the business value of new technologies in an easy to understand, common sense manner. He frequently speaks at IBM events all over the world. Dennis provides insight on how he helps IT executives find solutions for their organization’s challenges.

Dr. Gururaj Rao's official title is IBM Fellow, Systems Chief Engineer, IBM Systems & Technology Group, where he has the responsibility for establishing the technical direction for IBM's Enterprise Systems. He leads an inter-divisional team of hardware, software and Research engineers. Working with enterprise customers and IBM's client facing units, he determines business and customer needs and drives the system design of IBM's enterprise systems to meet those needs.
